The popularity of non-invasive procedures continues to expand! Although as a surgeon, I always prefer to be in the operating room with my scalpel, I must confess that I personally will opt for a non-invasive treatment if it can achieve my goals. The newest instrument in our office is Pellevé, a radio-frequency based, non-invasive treatment that delivers energy deep into the skin to reduce fine to moderate wrinkles on the face and body.
Pellevé works by generating heat build-up at the junction of the dermis and the fat, modifying the collagen bundles deep in the skin. The skin contracts and the growth of new collagen is stimulated, resulting in firmer, tighter skin. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of mild to moderate wrinkles on both the face and the body. While everyone likes the idea of reducing wrinkles on the face, to date there have been relatively few options for wrinkles on the body. For example, patients who have had children and have mild excess skin without fat haven’t been able to achieve good results with traditional therapies. The approval this year for use of Pellevé on the body, including the abdomen, is a wonderful addition to the armamentarium of treatments for slightly loose skin. However, in cases of significant excess skin, for example following significant weight loss, abdominoplasty is still the best option.
The Pellevé treatment is almost painless, and my assistant informed me that to her it felt like a hot stone massage! You can go back to your normal activities immediately following treatment. Some patients have temporary redness of the skin for 10-20 minutes following treatment. Depending upon the number of areas you are having treated, the treatment can range from 20-45 minutes.
You should see some results immediately, as the initial swelling from the procedure will smooth the most superficial wrinkles. When performed in conjunction with a cleansing facial, you will notice an immediate glow. The long-term effects will begin to be apparent in approximately 3-4 weeks as the collagen remodels. The wrinkle reduction and skin firming effects of the Pellevé treatment will continue to improve for at least six months. Over time, your skin texture and tone will also continue to improve.
Three initial treatments, each spaced 4 weeks apart, are recommended. After that, maintenance treatments should be scheduled once per year. However, my esthetician has noted that many patients enjoy the immediate effects of Pellevé so much that they will return for treatments prior to major events.
