When to Consider Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion. Despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, some people may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. These areas may be due to family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. Liposuction surgery can be used to treat stubborn fat pockets in many parts of the body including the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, chest, and chin. It is not a treatment for obesity and is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite. People with stubborn areas of fat and who exercise regularly are the ideal candidates for liposuction.

Examination

During your examination, Dr. Naidu will evaluate the areas of excess fatty deposits and the quality of your overlying skin. The ideal candidate for liposuction surgery is a patient who has excellent skin tone or tissue elasticity with isolated areas of excess fat. She will also discuss your ideal weight, your plans for future pregnancies, and any weight-loss programs which may be recommended. Medical photographs will be taken for your record which assist in the planning stages of surgery. In some cases, patients may also be candidates for non-invasive treatments, such as CoolSculpting® or Kybella®, and this can also be determined by a thorough examination.
